About Maka Maka
Maka Maka is a woman-owned artisanal luxury brand devoted to craftsmanship, sustainability, and timeless design. Each piece is meticulously handcrafted in collaboration with skilled artisans, using natural materials and guided by fair trade principles. Our Circular and Slow Fashion Apparel Collection is conceived and made in Atlanta, reflecting a commitment to thoughtful production, enduring quality, and the celebration of both local and global talent.
Maka Maka is, at its essence, an expression of considered living—where craftsmanship is honored, materials are respected, and every piece carries a story shaped by journey, intention, and time.

The Founder
The vision for Maka Maka was shaped by its founder, Mitun Chaudhuri, whose journey began at a defining crossroads. While living in Vancouver, she stepped away from a career in Information Technology to pursue a more meaningful path—one grounded in creativity, purpose, and social impact. Choosing to become a social entrepreneur, she set out to build a brand that would honor both people and process.
An explorer at heart, Mitun’s travels across continents have left a lasting imprint on the brand’s design language. From the remote stillness of Svalbard to the stark expanse of the Atacama Desert, from the vibrant energy of India to the rich textures and colors of Buenos Aires, each place has informed a worldview shaped by contrast, culture, and connection. These global influences, paired with the natural beauty of the United States and Canada, are woven into every Maka Maka collection—subtle, refined, and deeply intentional.
The name Maka Maka, meaning “friend” in Hawaiian, reflects the spirit at the core of the brand: a sense of connection—between maker and wearer, tradition and modernity, design and responsibility.

The Journey
The origins of Maka Maka trace back to Vancouver in 2009, where founder Mitun Chaudhuri introduced her first venture, Rajboori Luxury Home Textiles. The collection featured vibrant, eclectic home textiles crafted from Organic Peace Silk—an early expression of her commitment to sustainable materials and refined craftsmanship.
In 2012, the brand evolved into Maka Maka, marking a new chapter with the opening of a flagship store and café in Kolkata (Calcutta), India. From this cultural and creative hub, Mitun cultivated a strong network of artisans across the country, building lasting relationships rooted in respect, heritage, and skill. This foundation continues to shape the brand’s identity—where every piece reflects a dialogue between tradition and contemporary design.
