Jamdani as a craft flourished under Mughal patronage in 14th century.; Persian name: “jam” = flower, “dani” = vase.
Woven muslin with intricate motifs with metallic Zari thread. Knowledge of the craft technique stays within Master weaver families and is handed down from generation to generation. It’s also denoted as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Woven on Muslin cotton and silk - lightweight saris and scarves celebrated for sheer elegance, still woven by hand.
Artisan’s Story: Gour & Mamata Singha The Husband-Wife team of Gour and Mamata is one of our core Jamdani Weavers. Mamata jexpanded the craft initiative once she married into the Singha family and now they employ many weavers in their town. Gour’s family has been practicing the craft for 3 generations.
